In 1927, 2,400 acres of land in the hills between Santa Monica and Thousand Oaks were purchased by Paramount Studios to become the Paramount Ranch - the filming location for more than a hundred Western movies between the 1920s and 1940s. The ranch is located within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, just north of the Mulholland Highway. Since 1980, the ranch has been part of the national park, and many of the sets used for filming remain on the location to this day.
